From the back of the book
“The White Queen tells the story of a woman of extraordinary beauty and ambition who, catching the eye of the newly crowned boy king, marries him in secret and ascends to royalty. While Elizabeth rises to the demands of her exalted position and fights for the success of her family, her two sons become central figures in a mystery the has confounded historians for centuries: the missing princes in the Tower of London whose fate is still unknown.”
My Thoughts
I love historical fiction, it is one of my favourite genres and this book did not disappoint me.
This book hooked me right from the start and took me on a thrilling ride. I read this book pretty much in one sitting and was not putting it down for anyone.
There was a certain element of fairy tale within in this book and if I picked it up correctly there was influences from Robin Hood and Cinderella within the book and they seen to counter act some of the more graphic and bloodier scenes within the book.
The only thing that disappointed me was that the character of Elizabeth confused me slightly she was portrayed as a obedient wife for the first half of the novel and then she seemed to turn into a manipulating shrew. Perhaps this could have been constructed a bit better so there was not such a sudden change in the character.
In my opinion Philippa Gregory is one of the masters of historical fiction and her books are always so well researched that you feel like you are right there watching the events unfold in front of your eyes.
I highly recommend this book to all historical fiction fans and existing fans of Philippa Gregory. Philippa Greggory is back on top form and I promise you will not be disappointed.

Hmm. I’m trying to remember if I’ve read this book before. Is this part of some kind of series? Ah, yes. I went to look it up – there is a series, called the cousins’ war. I feel like I have read this book, but I don’t remember anything about it. I am a big fan of Philippa Gregory though – she is amazing with historical fiction.
Yes it is part of the cousins’ war series. I am looking forward to reading The Red Queen as soon as I have finished what I am reading. I agree I think she has an amazing talent for historical fiction.
Having gone through the Tudor books, I’ve lately been backtracking to this previous time period. It’s interesting, but I’m still getting comfortable with the history. (that Tudor stuff I could just about rattle off now.) I’m looking forward to this book as a “treat” for finishing out the school year.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
