The novel is set in 19th century New England and tells the story of Ren, who was abandoned at birth and left at St. Anthony’s Catholic Orphanage. Ren’s left hand is missing and he has always wondered how it happened. Ren has no future except a career in the military. That is until his long lost brother Benjamin Nab comes to claim him. Ren’s life takes a adventurous turn as his long lost brother is a con man and a thief.
I could not put this book down and it was a enjoyable read. This characters in this novel are so vibrant and colourful. They all have their own back story and this really helps to brings the story to life. However I did feel that some of the characters were based on stereotypes that didn’t really work in the contexts of the novel. At times the narrative was a bit flawed but overall this was a good debut novel. I would be interested in reading future works from this author.
