History and fiction merge seamlessly in this luminous novel about artistic vision and sensual awakening. Girl with a Pearl Earring tells the story of sixteen-year-old Griet, whose life is transformed by her brief encounter with genius … even as she herself is immortalized in canvas and oil. I read this book in under a day as I felt I was unable to put it down. Chevalier has a way of bringing a certain character and atmosphere that I have noticed in all the novels she has wrote. There is no way to describe this book other than amazing. The emotion throughout the book really did take my breath away in parts and I can’t believe that I had this book for so long on my tbr shelf.
I believe that you can tell a talented author when they make you feel that you are in the novel watching the events as they unfold and this was exactly what Chevalier has done. I believe the silence that is present throughout parts of the novel is done to bring character to the novel and I believe it works. In parts the prose didn’t work for me and I did become a bit bored. However overall it was a good read and I would recommend to people that just want a quick read.
