Sonea, a Black Magician of Kyralia, is horrified when her son, Lorkin, volunteers to assist the new Guild Ambassador to Sachaka. When word comes that Lorkin has gone missing, Sonea is desperate to find him, but if she leaves the city she will be exiled forever. And besides, an old friend is in need of her help.
Most of her friend’s family has been murdered – the latest in a long line of assassinations to plague the leading Thieves of the city. There has always been rivalry, but now the Thieves are waging a deadly underworld war, and it appears they have been doing so with magical assistance.
Trudi Canavan is one of my favourite fantasy authors. I remember reading The Magicians Guild and just thinking wow and she has not disappointed me once.
The Ambassador’s Mission is perhaps not my favourite of all her novels but it is still a very good novel. I loved that the world which Canavan created for the Black Magician Trilogy is back and we are introduced to new characters which help add new life to the story. Old characters are back as well and I feel this helps to connect the two trilogy’s concerning the same world together.
I loved seeing how the characters that were present on the Black Magician Trilogy have evolved over 20 years, it was like going back to visit old friends and to me this is a sign of a gifted fantasy writer.
For me it was the pace of this novel that I did not enjoy, it felt like Canavan was trying to spread out the plot so it would last three thick volumes. However for me at times I felt like the plot was spread a bit to thin.
Overall I do recommend this book to readers that have read The Black Magician Trilogy however to new readers I recommend you start with The Black Magician Trilogy as it is an excellent introduction into the unique world that Canavan has created.
